Honouring Past Champions

This September, (date TBD) the ’67 Championship Gaiters men’s basketball team, who were coached by Garth Smith, will earn their place of honour by their induction into the prestigious RBC Wall of Distinction.

The ’67 hoopsters steamrolled opponents with a near perfect 15-1 regular season record. In the conference championship game, the Gaiters emerged with a convincing 81-66 victory over MacDonald College.

With the OSLAA championship in hand the Gaiters traveled to Calgary for the National Championships. The Gaiters earned the Bronze medal (3rd in the country) by defeating UNB 57-45 and Waterloo Lutheran 67-55.

Possessing the best defense in the league, the Gaiters were also a coherent group on offense led by all stars Peter Munzar and Butch Staples. Rounding out the starting five were Dave Oldfield, Ken Flewelling and Nick Busing. Championship depth was provided by Brad Jones, Richard Purcell, John and Doug MacKenzie, Lindsay Black, Barrie Hall and Tom Veary. John McDonough was also a valuable part of the team – the first Bishop’s basketball team to earn national prominence.

The 1966-67 basketball Gaiters personified what team spirit was all about. They were a credit to themselves, their fans and the University. We look forward to honouring this team in September.
