2005 - a record setting Gaiter Classic

The 2005 Gaiter Classic organizing committee was somewhat concerned before the start of this year’s Classic – a record 180 participants had registered for the tournament. A nice dilemma you say? Their worries stemmed from the sheer number of golfers on the course. How could we ensure that 180 participants enjoy their day of golf without turning the event into a painfully long day? A day of great weather, good course management and plenty of organization prior to the event made for one of the best Classic’s of all time. Equally important was the fact that a record number of golfers raised a record amount – the Classic netted $22,000 (numbers still coming in), making this Gaiter Classic one of the best fundraisers the Athletic Department has held.

The Classic still brings together alumni, friends of Gaiter athletics, sponsors, and former and present coaches for a day of golf and fellowship. After the round of golf, all shared their stories of past athletic prowess and funny anecdotes of their favorite Gaiter moments. New this year was a silent auction as well as a Chinese auction which kept things busy, and Tom Allen on the microphone, right through dinner.

This event has become a highlight for many as they travel back to “Lennoxvegas” a place that played a large part in everyone’s life. This continued support from all is extremely important to the success of Gaiter Athletics as the proceeds go directly to the department, which in turn benefits the student-athletes.

On behalf of the organizing committee Joey Sabo, Matt McBrine, Tom Allen, Eddie Pomykala, and myself, along with our Honourary Chairman Bruce Coulter a huge thank you to all those who attended and shared in a great day at Milby. For those that missed the event, I hope you can be with us next year to partake in a special Gaiter day.

As always, I encourage you to drop me a line or a call at 819-822-9600 ext. 2688 should you wish to discuss Gaiter Athletics – my door is always open.

Enjoy your summer,
Tony Addona
Director of Athletics
