On the Football Recruiting Trail....

Training camp seems like it is just around the corner. Players will be reporting to campus on Saturday, August 20th. We are expecting no more than 70-75 players this year. Returning players have all been working out hard; some even staying in Lennoxville for the summer to train. As always the program welcomes football alumni to campus during camp an invitation will come later this summer, but please mark that date on your calendar.

Our staff is still hard at work recruiting student-athletes to the program. We have lost some prospective players, some very good players, citing everything from distance away from their homes to the inadequacies of our facilities. We have however, received commitments from some of the best high school players in the country! Some of our recently committed players include:

James Yurichuk LB Brampton,ON
Kyle Jones LB/P/K Mississauga,ON
Joel Lefebvre QB Kingston,ON
Marcus Noel CB Toronto,ON (transfer)
Dave Iverson HB/S Windsor, ON
Michael Wabisa WR Windsor,ON
Hyacinthe Boule-Regnier LB Montreal, QC
Michael Atcho DL Windsor, ON

Yurichuk and Jones are arguably the top two high school linebacker prospects in the country. These two young men will have a tremendous impact on our football team. Joel Lefebvre is crucial to the program as up until now we do not have a capable backup for Kyle Williams. Iverson and Noel will add speed and power to our secondary. In Wabisa we now have a burner at WR he runs a legitimate 4.3 sec. 40yard.

To be successful in the future we are going to need to rely on alumni and friends to help us identify, monitor and recruit quality players from coast to coast to the Gaiter football program.
I am pleased that a number of former Gaiters answered our call to volunteer their time to assist with our recruiting efforts through an Alumni Recruiting Network. Together we will work to improve our recruitment efforts. Gaiter football recruiting captains are:

Quebec City: Peter Dunn 66
Montreal: Jake Vaughan 87
Ottawa: Carlos Blizzard 89
Ottawa Valley: Gord Jones 91
Kingston: Matt Legge 96
Toronto: Gary Chown 74
Hamilton: Wally Zatylny 88
Guelph/Halton: Bruce Cruikshank 85
London: Rob Allen 73
Manitoba: Todd Toutant 87
Alberta: Kenny Polson 87 & Steve Etcheverry 77
BC: Paul McHenry 92 & Tom Europe 93

These gentlemen will be ably assisted by several other alumni in their city/region/province. This is a huge step in the right direction and will certainly benefit the program for years to come.
It is very clear that Bishop's Football Alumni genuinely care about B.U., our football program, present and future.

In mid-May four Gaiters -- Matthew Chown, Mathieu Cock's-Morrissette, David Dellaby and Dan McCullough played in the East/West Bowl held at Sir Wilfred Laurier University. The game and the week of practice is intended for potential CFL draft choices to showcase their talent in front of CFL scouts while playing against other top CIS players. It was gratifying to see our top players not only performed well but be recognized by many in attendance as standouts in the game.

First game of the year is at home on Monday, September 5 (Labour Day) against Sherbrooke, our cross town rivals. They too have had a good recruiting year so it should be a great match up. Homecoming is Saturday, September 24th against Concordia and televised on RDS. Hope to see many of you on campus this fall!
